How Small Businesses Show Up in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT

Everyone is selling "AI SEO" right now. Here's what Google and OpenAI actually document, what the research shows, and which tactics are mostly hype, sorted so you can spend your time wisely.

The short answer

There's no secret trick. Google says AI Overviews need no special optimization: your pages must be indexed and follow normal SEO best practices. To show up, let search and AI crawlers reach your site, put clear answers in real text, keep your Google Business Profile accurate, and earn steady, recent reviews. ChatGPT search also needs its crawler, OAI-SearchBot, allowed.

Meet Priya, who runs a small house-cleaning company in Portland. Last month a customer told her, "I asked ChatGPT for a good cleaner near me, and you came up." The next week, a marketing company emailed offering to "rank her in AI" for a monthly fee. Is that a real service, or a new label on old SEO? Mostly the second. Let's sort evidence from hype.

What are AI Overviews, and how often do they appear?

AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries that appear at the top of some Google results, with links to the sources they used. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini give similar answers inside chat. They show up far more often on "how" and "what" questions than on "hire someone" searches.

Seer Interactive's April 2026 analysis of 53 brands found AI Overviews on 36% of informational searches, but only 8% of commercial searches and 5% of transactional ones. That matters for local businesses: a search like "emergency plumber Portland" is much less likely to trigger one than "why is my drain gurgling."

Meanwhile, customers are clearly using AI to find local businesses. In BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults (February 2026), 45% said they used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% the year before. Yet 40% said they trust AI platforms for business recommendations, so most people still double-check.

What does Google officially say about getting into AI Overviews?

Google says there are no extra requirements. In its guide "AI features and your website" (updated December 10, 2025), Google explains that a page just needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in regular search. It also says you don't need new machine-readable files, "AI text files" or special markup.

Google's listed best practices are the same fundamentals good SEO has always used:

  • Let Google crawl your site (check your robots.txt file).
  • Link to important pages from other pages on your site so they can be found.
  • Provide a good page experience (fast, stable, works on phones).
  • Put important content in text, not only inside images or videos.
  • Support your text with good photos and video.
  • Make sure any structured data matches what's visible on the page.
  • Keep your Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date.

Google has also said llms.txt, a proposed "AI instructions" file, isn't something it uses. In mid-2025, Google's John Mueller and Gary Illyes both said normal SEO is what matters for AI Overviews.

How do ChatGPT and Perplexity find your website?

Through their own web crawlers, which you control in your robots.txt file. If you block them, you can't show up in their search answers.

Google-ExtendedGoogleControls use of your content for Gemini, not whether you appear in Search's AI featuresYour choice

What about Bing? It's widely said that ChatGPT search leans on Bing's index, but we couldn't confirm that from OpenAI's own documentation. Setting up Bing Webmaster Tools and Bing Places is free and low-effort, so it's cheap insurance either way.

Do AI Overviews mean fewer clicks to your website?

Yes, for the most part. Every major independent study found fewer clicks when an AI summary appears. The size of the drop varies by study, so here they are with their dates:

StudyWhat it found
Pew Research Center (published July 2025; March 2025 browsing data)People clicked a regular result on 8% of visits with an AI summary vs. 15% without one. They clicked a link inside the summary only 1% of the time.
Ahrefs (April 2025)Top-ranking pages got about 34.5% fewer clicks when an AI Overview appeared.
Ahrefs update (December 2025 data, as reported in Feb 2026)That drop was reported to have grown to about 58%.
Seer Interactive (April 2026)On informational searches, brands cited in the AI Overview got more than twice the clicks per impression of brands that weren't cited (2.07% vs. 0.94%).

Google, for its part, says clicks from AI Overviews are "higher quality," with people spending more time on the site. That's Google's claim; independent studies haven't confirmed it.

The practical lesson: being cited beats being ignored, and your "hire me" pages are less exposed than your how-to blog posts. For a local business, the goal is less about raw blog traffic and more about being the name the AI mentions.

Which AI search tactics are proven, and which are hype?

Here's our honest sorting of the advice you'll hear, from "documented by the platforms" down to "don't pay for this."

Evidence levelTactics
Documented (Google or OpenAI say so)Allow the right crawlers; get indexed; put key content in text; keep structured data matching the page; keep your Business Profile current
Reasonably supportedStrong regular SEO; clear, answer-first writing; citing sources and real numbers; reviews and mentions on other trusted sites (Pew found Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit made up 15% of AI summary sources)
Hype or unprovenllms.txt files; "special AI schema"; guaranteed "rank in ChatGPT" packages; tools that claim to know exact AI ranking factors
About "GEO": Generative Engine Optimization is based mainly on one academic paper (2023, published at KDD 2024). Researchers tested a simulated AI search engine built on an older model, not real ChatGPT or Google traffic. Adding citations, quotes and statistics helped in that lab setup. It's a useful idea, but when a vendor quotes a big percentage boost from GEO as proven fact, be skeptical.

What should a local small business do this month?

Focus on the basics that help in regular Google, Maps and AI answers at the same time. Here's a checklist Priya could finish in a few weekends:

  1. Complete your Google Business Profile: right categories, services, hours, photos and service area. Our Google Business Profile and local SEO guide walks through it.
  2. Earn recent reviews and reply to them. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 74% of consumers care most about reviews from the last three months, and 82% read AI-generated review summaries.
  3. Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere: your site, Google, Yelp, Bing Places and directories.
  4. Give each service its own page with clear, plain-text answers to the questions customers actually ask.
  5. Add LocalBusiness structured data that matches what's on the page. It's good hygiene, not a guaranteed ticket in.
  6. Check robots.txt so Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot aren't blocked.
  7. Get mentioned locally: neighborhood news, "best of" lists and community groups.

Be patient: SOCi's 2026 report (a press release covering multi-location brands) said ChatGPT recommended just 1.2% of the local business locations it studied. It's early, and nobody has proven exactly which factors get a local business picked. Results take time, just like regular SEO (see how long SEO takes to work). If you'd rather hand this off, our SEO management service covers all of it, and a well-built website gives AI tools clear text to work with.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay Google to appear in AI Overviews?

Not as an organic source. Google says there's no special program or requirement beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed placement.

Does llms.txt help my business show up in AI answers?

There's no evidence it does. Google has said it doesn't use llms.txt, and its AI features guide says no special AI files are needed.

Should I block AI crawlers?

If you want to appear in AI answers, don't block OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot. Blocking GPTBot (training) or using Google-Extended is a separate choice that doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search or Google's AI Overviews.

Does structured data get me into AI Overviews?

Google says it isn't required. It helps search engines understand your business, so it's worth adding, but it must match the visible content on your page.

How do I know if AI Overviews send me traffic?

Google counts AI feature traffic inside Search Console's regular Performance report under "Web." It isn't broken out separately, so watch overall trends and ask new customers how they found you.
